Right now we’re reading How to be Antiracist in the mastermind.
That’s because America has a racism problem. It’s systemic — which means it’s ingrained into the education system. Of course, it’s not limited to education but since that’s where we have influence, we will focus here.
This post is a curated podcast list of antiracist education conversations I’ve been having since 2015. I’m sure I forgot to include some, but this playlist a great place to start.
The playlist shares practical tools and will point you toward helpful resources that I’ve created or have come across.
I will share my story and journey because I believe we learn best from stories and maybe that will inspire you to do something similar within your community.
If you are silent about issues that matter, people will come up with their own story about why.
You are a leader.
Your work matters and your voice matters. Don’t let a fear of not getting it right or pissing some people off stop you from sharing.
The other problem with silence is that you sit from the sidelines. That form of inactivity is actually oppressive and helps a racist system continue.
I refuse to be silent and I encourage you to speak out as well.
An antiracist education podcast playlist
Over the years I have spoken to many amazing leaders. Below are some podcasts that would be good for you to (re)listen to, share with your peers in leadership, and share with your staff/community.
If you find value in these shows, I humbly ask that you share via social media so we can help as many educators as possible. It will only take a minute of your time and you just might save someone’s life.
Joe Truss joined me on this podcast to talk about white supremacy culture. Listen to this show to learn how to fight racism within school. Joe wrote an awesome thread on Twitter all educators should engage with here. He blogs here.
I went to university with Marcus Campbell. It was great to catch up with him on the podcast and hear how he challenged systemic racism within his school’s dress code and access to rigorous courses. Follow Marcus on Twitter here.
Tracey Benson and I talk about “Exploring Race, Racism, and Unconscious Bias in Schools.” In addition to the podcast grab his book on that topic here.
Tracey also wrote a helpful article “What Educators Should—and Should Not Do—in Response to George Floyd’s Death.”
My friend, Demetrius Ball, shares how he is changing education and providing equity via restorative practices vs. traditional and discriminatory discipline. Check out Demetrius’s powerful antiracist blog post here. Follow him on Twitter.
Here Afrika Afeni-Mills talks about the skill set leaders need to go deep with equity. Follow her on Twitter.
Darnisa Amante created the Disruptive Equity in Education Project (DEEP) and talks with me on the podcast about equity in education.
